Fellowship Overview
AAUW International Fellowships provide support for women who are non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents to pursue full-time graduate studies in STEM fields in the United States.
The program is recognized for investing in women who intend to apply their STEM expertise, professional skills, and leadership to benefit their home countries or communities.
The fellowships prioritize graduate studies in STEM disciplines—science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine—at accredited U.S. institutions, with a limited number of awards available for study in countries other than the applicant’s own. The program specifically seeks women who are non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents, who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to empowering other women and girls.
International Fellowships provide a stipend of $20,000 for master’s degree candidates and $25,000 for doctoral candidates, disbursed in two equal payments at the beginning and midpoint of the fellowship term.
Applicants must identify as women, be admitted or enrolled in their first master’s or academic/professional doctorate degree in a STEM field, and possess at least one academic degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the highest degree earned. Study must be full-time at a U.S. institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, and the program must begin on or before September 15, 2027, and be completed on or after April 30, 2028. Applicants must reside in the U.S. or country of study for the fellowship period. A limited number of fellowships are available for study outside the applicant’s country of citizenship or the U.S. under specific circumstances, such as travel bans or Graduate Women International membership.
Applicants must not be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or applicants for U.S. permanent residency (green card). Only one degree type and one specific field may be selected per application, and dual degree applicants must choose a single field for consideration. Foreign branches of U.S. institutions are considered outside the United States for the purposes of this fellowship.
